For SELLmatix, any new computer that can
run Windows or Ubuntu Linux is powerful enough to run the software.
SELLmatix requires a network adaptor, either wired, WiFi or both, but almost every new system qualifies.
The computer will need to have enough "ports" to connect the POS devices. Most new
computers have USB ports, and most USB devices are also available with a USB connection.
If you are connecting an Electronic Scale or Pole Display, you will also need a serial port, and
if you already have old printers, scanners etc. which have serial or parallel connections, you
will need enough serial or parallel ports to connect the devices. Serial and parallel ports can be
added to the expansion slots of a traditional computer, but they can't easily be added to notebook or
tablet style devices.
There are also USB to Serial and USB to Parallel cable adaptors. About half these cables we have
tested actually work, so only consider this as a last resort.
Usually the cheapest and flexible option is a generic "white box" computer. However these take
up quite a bit of space, and the fans tend to get clogged and need service after about 2 years.
Parts are readily available for these at very low cost.
Many of our customers also use their POS system for playing music in a restaurant/bar, and for
security camera surveilance. We discourage this practice, because with a POS system it is much
better to have it locked down so staff can't play games, or introduce anything that might interfere
with the stability of the system. Generally however, playing music works OK, but video cameras,
particularly when there are a lot of cameras, can cause stability problems.
Apart from these factors, pretty much any standard computer will do, and there are far too many
available to make any specific recommendation.
Special Packages
There are a couple of systems that deserve special mention because they offer outstanding value.
The Dell Duo series of convertable netbooks work as both a laptop computer and a Tablet.
When running POS, the screen flips around and covers the keyboard and the Touch Screen is
used to operate the Point of Sale.
When being configured, or used for other purposes, it works like a normal Notebook.
An optional cradle is available so the device can stand up in Tablet mode, otherwise it can
be operated flat.
The unit is small enough for a waiter to take it to tables to enter orders.
These DO NOT have a wired network adaptor, but do have WiFi network support. The optional
cradle has a wired network adaptor if you require a cabled network.
The machines DO NOT have serial or parallel ports, and printers etc. should be USB.
These machines offer outstanding value for money, because in the same device, you get Touch Screen,
UPS (it is a notebook, and has built in battery), and can be used both as a tablet and normal
laptop. Some touch screens alone cost more than this device.
Several of our customers use these units and are very pleased with them.
